In 2003, I lost everything.
My Lincoln Town Car was towed and I couldn’t afford to get it back.
Lost my job at Time Warner because I had no car to drive.
Got kicked out of my beach house rental.
Ended up living in a urine-soaked garage that smelled like death.
My wife left. We divorced. I hit a level of humiliation I never knew existed.
I had $27, two bags of dirty clothes, and a broken Sony video camera.
Eventually, I borrowed enough for a Greyhound ticket back to Portland… feeling like a complete and utter failure.
I was homeless, sleeping on a friend’s couch, wondering how I was ever going to dig out of the hole.
Then, one afternoon in the public library… I placed a simple classified ad on Craigslist.
It wasn’t fancy.
I just told the truth.
I wrote from the heart and I asked for help.
A guy up on Mt. Hood messaged me.
He had a beat-up cabin in the woods. No plumbing. No bathroom. No kitchen.
He said, “If you’re willing to clean it out, you can live there rent-free for the first month. After that, $200 a month.”
It wasn’t glamorous.
I had to build a makeshift outhouse in the snow just to go to the bathroom.
But I was no longer homeless.
That one ad, that one letter, opened the door.
That was the moment I realized something important:
Words can change your circumstances.
Words can change your value.
Words can create your future.
And once I understood that… I began writing my way out of hell.
But that little broken-down A-frame cabin, as rough as it was, had three things that changed everything:
A wood stove
A power line
A phone jack
That phone jack gave me my first dial-up internet connection.
I didn’t have plumbing, a kitchen, or even a toilet, but I had access. To the world. To information. To people who had done what I wanted to do.
I chopped wood to stay warm. Bathed in the river. And for the first time in months… I could breathe.
Within a few weeks of odd jobs with a contractor friend, I scraped together enough to buy a beat up 1973 Chevy Blazer and got my very first computer!
Now I had a keyboard. And a way to get around.
That’s when I built my first website, an ugly Verizon site with a URL like:myverizonsite.9392jsaxlwd.com
No one was lining up to invest in my future.
But I knew if I could write clever Craigslist and eBay ads, I could flip freebies into food money. So I did.
Every sale paid for another day. Another email. Another step forward and another tank of gas.
I knew the guy who rented me the cabin liked to make deals.
So I sat down and wrote him a letter asking if he’d sell me the place.
I had no down payment. Nothing to sweeten the pot except a higher monthly payment.
But I poured everything I had into that letter. Every word mattered.
He said yes. We agreed on $45,000 and just like that, I went from renter to owner.
One week later, I came home and saw a dozen cops swarming my driveway.
A meth-fueled domestic violence incident next door. One guy arrested. One hospitalized from a gun shot. A total disaster.
Days later, my friend Lloyd, a private investigator in Portland called me.
He was working the case and needed help contacting the owner of the crime scene cabin.
I tracked down the owner, and we went to photograph the house.
Turns out, the place had been built in the 1930s by a legendary mountain man Bill Lenz. Hand-hewn logs. Custom everything. But now? It was wrecked.
Blood stains. Trash. Drugs. Total chaos.
And yet… all I could see was opportunity.
This time, I pitched the owner directly.
I offered to clean out and renovate the place for 6 months rent-free, then purchase it on a rent-to-own contract.
He said yes.
And just like that… house #2.
Later, I bought house #3, also next door the same way.
Wrote a letter. Got a yes. Flipped it for a profit 6 months later.Â
Three homes. Zero money down. All because I knew how to write a letter.
My P.I. buddy Lloyd was drowning in cases. He asked if I’d get licensed to help him.
I laughed. No chance.
I had a rap sheet longer than a CVS receipt with five felonies by age 16. There was no way Oregon would approve me for a license… right?
But Lloyd said, “Write them a letter and explain.”
So I did. I wrote with honesty. Vulnerability. Vision.
And Holy Crap... They Approved Me!
The state gave me my private investigator’s license.

So I bought myself a cool Ford Aerostar spy van fully loaded with surveillance gear, including cameras hidden in the taillights.
I’m serious.

Most days I’d sit for 10 to 12 hours in that van, engine off, windows cracked, caffeine in hand… watching cheaters cheat and scammers scam.
But 95% of the job?
Total Boredom.
So I passed the time devouring copywriting gold from the greats:

The more I read, the more it clicked:
These guys weren’t making $35 an hour. They were making $35,000… $350,000… even $3.5 million from a single letter.
