The Lost Art Of Picking Up A Phone And Saying Hi

Yesterday I picked up the phone and called about 15 people that have either joined my new team or are the fence about joining. None of theses entrepreneurs were remotely aware that I would be calling them, yet EVERYONE of them was shocked it was actually me on the phone.

One woman in particular thought it may actually be a prank for half a second. However, after cracking one joke she knew it was me. Last year when I was traveling through Seattle in my RV I invited her and her family out to a comedy show, picked up the tab for them and shared some really fun stories. So once I started being silly, she was assured it was really me.

Anyhow, it was a bit baffling to see how shocked people really were that I’d take the time to dial 10 simple digits and say… “Hi Peter, this is Jason Moffatt” and then ask how I could help them out. In todays world we are so accustom to email and text messages it’s rare that we actually communicate with others via phone unless it’s your family, best buddy or a customer service rep you can’t wait to complain to about some shotty service.

If you haven’t picked up your phone and reached out to your customers or prospects I highly urge you to give it a try. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the reaction. Even if it’s a simple as calling and saying… “Hi Debra, Jason Moffatt here and I was just calling to find out how you liked my Drunken Billiards Secrets ebook”, you’ll learn a lot about your buyers and their true desires.

Not only will you learn valuable information about your market and those in your market but you’ll put a human touch to your business that will set you apart from 99% of internet marketers who only play in the digital realm. Don’t even get me started how happy people get when you send them a Thank You Card in the mail. It’s astonishing what .99 cents can accomplish!

As more and more people start selling things on the internet the consumers continually become more and more skeptical, and rightfully so. It’s hard to sift through the rubbish on the internet. But when you set yourself apart from the herd and actually reach out to others in need you’ll be a marketer who will not be forgotten. Your emails will get read more. Your links will get clicked more often. And, you’ll make more sales.

So, I encourage you to not hide behind your computer screen and add a human touch to your business by reaching out to others on the phone. And if you want to take it even one step further, get out of the darn house and actually meet them in person. And if you want to take it 10 steps further, invite them to a fun shin dig and pick up the tab. Do that and you’ll have raving fans and customers for life.

PS: I remember one time I took about a dozen seminar attendees to a Padres game and bought tickets for the whole group. Til this day I still get heart warming emails about it and I have to admit, it feels good. I had no motive or intention of trying to get business or money from any of these people. I simply just wanted to enjoy the ballgame with a bunch of people I liked. It was a great day!

Not everything has to be about the almighty dollar dollar bill y’all. Sometimes it’s nice to just be a normal person who shows interest and sincerity in others.

So You Claim To Hate Squeeze Pages Hey?

Recently I gave a speech at the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club for a group of entrepreneurs and forward thinking people. The crowd was great. The speakers were stellar. The content was unlike anything you ever see at a typical marketing event.

For instance, one speaker was ranting about how he hated squeeze pages and the majority of tactics that marketers used online today. And while I could understand his point, I felt the good ole squeeze page was getting a bad rap. You see, I don’t really think it’s squeeze pages that people hate. People will gladly give up their email if it’s for something they want. So what do they really hate?

As the gentleman (and he is a fine gentleman) was ranting about squeeze pages and such I saw the crowd nodding along. It appeared they had the same feeling. Keep in mind, this crowd was much more heart centered and philanthropic than an average marketing seminar so it’s easy to see how they may have a distaste for many manipulative sales tactics.

So I got an idea.

When I got on stage I mentioned that instead of giving the crowd a theoretical or a feel good speech, I much preferred to give them something tactical that they could use in their life and business. Sadly, we were under a time crunch and my ability to teach them the type of tactics I would of liked simply couldn’t fit into that time frame.

So I asked the crowd… “How would you like all of my training to be sent to you in a email when I get home tomorrow? Would you guys like that? Please raise your hand if you’d like access to all of my marketing materials”.

Almost every person in the place raised their hands. Then I said… “All I need for you to do is to send me a email and let me know you want the materials, and I’ll reply back and send them to you. Does that sound fair”?

Not a single person had a problem with it.

Then I asked… “How many of you hate squeeze pages”?

The overwhelming majority of the people raised their hands.

Then I asked… “How many of you felt manipulated by what I just did”?

Of course nobody did. They were stoked I was going to send them a bunch of free stuff. But what they didn’t realize was that I essentially just squeezed their email address out of them.

You see, it’s only an annoying squeeze page when it’s something you’re not really that interested in. But when it’s packed with value, and something you want to get your greedy little hands on, it’s just a minor bump in the road to getting where you want to go.

There’s nothing wrong with asking someone to give up their email address, phone number or address in exchange for valuable information. Unless you’re pioneering ESP marketing, I’m not sure how else you’d follow up with them.

So remember, it’s not the squeeze page that’s evil. It’s the way in which you present your offer, deliver your offer and follow up that is going to dictate how someone feels about your marketing, not whether or not you asked for their email address.

“Dude, I’d Love To Pick Your Brain”

“Dude, I’d Love To Pick Your Brain”

Please, please, pretty please DO NOT pick my brain!

It’s the biggest asset I have going for myself and the last thing I want is someone picking at it.

All joking aside, this phrase is my biggest pet peeve out there. I’m not exactly sure why, but I literally picture someone actually picking my brain with a fork when they say this and it’s not the most appealing thing.

However, I started turning this slight annoyance into a killer profit stream a few years ago. Here’s how it happened…

A newsletter subscriber kept begging to take me out to lunch to “Pick My Brain”. I kept ignoring him. Finally, after about the 4th email and his persistent asking I decided to tell him…

“I do lunch gigs for $500 an hour, and you pick up the lunch bill too”.

“No problem” he replied.

WHAT?

I was just trying to shove the guy away, yet he didn’t balk for half a second at the price. It was in that moment I realized to truly value my brain, and if people wanted to pick at it, it didn’t have to be a bad thing.

After that day I scheduled many lunch gigs, some for up to $1000 per hour. And to this day, I have no problem charging these types of fees because I know during that session I’m going to give advice that far exceeds their investment.

It’s a win win for both parties, and I don’t have to get all bitchy about them saying “Can I pick your brain”.

Anyhow, wouldn’t you love to be able to charge what you’re truly worth? Aren’t you sick of slaving away or handing over the entire farm for $20 an hour? I don’t even think a guy can pay his mortgage here in San Diego on $20 an hour.

Guru Product Blueprints Opt In Pages

Today I want to share with you a new trend that I’ve seen taking place in the internet marketing world and break down why I think it’s working so well.

I also want to introduce you to Eben Pagan’s “Guru Product Blueprints” prelaunch material because…

1. Eben provides tremendous value in his free prelaunch videos.

2. If you resonate with the upfront value he gives, you may also be interested in his “Guru Product Blueprints“.

So…

I first saw these type of opt in pages used by Ryan Deiss. Knowing Ryan as well as I do, I know he’s testing the heck out of these things. And therefore, they must be working well.

Below I’m going to show you 4 different type of opt in pages (aka: squeeze pages) that Eben Pagan is currently using in his Guru Product Blueprint launch. Whether or not you’re interested in the launch material is irrelevant. What I want you to focus on is the strategy being implemented with these pages.

So, lets break down what’s up with these pages…

First of all you can see they are pretty much just a simple image with a opt in form on them. Yep, it’s that simple.

But does this really work, and why?

Here is my educated guesses as to why I believe they work in certain markets (notice I said certain and not “all”)…

1. They are simple and there is very little distractions (except for a cute butt on a girly).

2. They employ pictures of a idyllic paradise (who doesn’t want to be hanging out at the beach right now? (pasty white albinos excluded).

3. This particular offer is challenging you by asking you to “Test Your Emotional Intelligence” (most of us are competitive in some sort).

4. It creates curiosity (what the heck is Emotional Intelligence?).

5. It offers you a FREE video (who doesn’t like free?). 

6. There is ONLY ONE OPTION! (giving people too many options often causes them to choose none.

After reviewing these 6 reasons it’s quite easy to see why a opt in page of this nature could potentially yield such a high rate of opt ins.

So my question to you is…

Does this compel you to sign up? Would you be open to trying a opt in page like this for your business?

I guarantee you’re about to see a whole lot more people mimicking this in the very near future. Of course once everyone and their grandmother has copied it, it will likely lose it’s effectiveness. But that’s ok because after that we can always test monkeys throwing poo or construction workers whistling at women from their scaffolding.

In the world of the internet, you just never know what is going to work unless you test it out.

SEO Advice You Probably Don’t Want To Hear

In todays post I’m going to give you some SEO advice that you probably don’t want to hear. However, if you follow this advice you’ll stand a far better chance of ranking well in the search engines over the long haul.

Yesterday I got a call from a friend I haven’t heard from in a while. It was nice to hear his voice and catch up on things we’ve missed over the last couple years.

Like many others, it seems his business sort of took a plunge recently and he’d begun moving in a new direction in his life and business, but like every entrepreneur I know, there’s a underlying addiction to all things internet marketing. He seems to be grasping at a handful of opportunities out there and was a bit unsure which one he should truly follow.

Now I will admit there are hundreds, if not thousands of ways to make a buck online. There is no end to the possibilities that exist. When one door closes, or a particular strategy seems to quit working, another one pops up around the corner. It never fails. And I reckon it will always be this way.

Anyhow, he asked me about a particular membership site that teaches a lot of SEO advice and whether or not I thought it was any good. I wasn’t going to name the service, but screw it… it’s called “Bring The Fresh“.

Bring The Fresh is run by a couple of guys named Kelly Felix (also known as the guy who created the infamous “Rich Jerk”) and Mike Long. Both are incredibly smart fellas. To be fully honest, I haven’t had the best relationship with these two over the years. I won’t go into specifics and spew out the drama, but lets just say I haven’t always liked the way these two have carried themselves.

Since Kelly parted ways from the Rich Jerk persona he’s grown up a lot, changed the way he does business and has proven himself to be a much nicer guy. I really dig that he’s into rescuing dogs, being a good dad and he treats his lady really good.

Lets move on.

There’s a ton of search engine optimization education out there and truthfully, I think most of it is rubbish and will actually hurt your sites more than it will help. However, I do believe that Bring The Fresh teaches very valuable information that you can learn and profit from. Keep in mind, I don’t claim to be a SEO wizard or know a whole lot about Google’s algorithm. What I do know is common sense.

And common sense tells me that if you are constantly trying to “game the system” or build links yourself in a manner that everyone else is doing, Google is going to catch up with you. Eventually they are going to spot trends and habitual behaviors that just don’t look natural and you’ll become a victim of one of their updates like Panda or Penguin.

So, here is the advice I gave my friend and the advice I’ve always given people over the years about SEO.

This is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. You need to ask yourself are you in this for the long haul or are you just trying to hustle a quick buck? I’m not knocking you if you just want to make a quick cash grab. It’s totally possible, it’s just not my strategy for the most part.

My strategy is as follows and it’s not a quick fix…

If you want to attain really kick ass rankings in the search engines, what you need to do is provide AMAZING content! This doesn’t mean hiring some Indian outsourcer to write articles for you, slapping together a mediocre blog post that is stuffed with keywords, and it surely isn’t about modeling or copying someone else. It’s not about using software to get a bunch of links really quick and I surely don’t advise you to buy links anywhere.

What I do advise you to do is be really awesome. Create content that is so good that people naturally just want to share it with their friends. You know the saying… “Build it and they will come”? It’s true if and only if what you build is so incredible that people just genuinely want to share it.

The hard part is it’s not exactly easy to create awesome content for most people. They don’t live a life that is exciting or share worthy, they may not possess good writing skills, their graphics might suck, they don’t know how to tell a story, etc etc. Lets face it, not everyone is talented in certain areas of their life.

And that is where the gold is. It’s in YOUR TALENT!

When you are talented, people will RUSH to your stuff. They’ll share it with friends, family and social networking peers. And this will take place without you having to ask or employ some marketing tricks or hacks. It will happen because what you are doing is true value.

If you continually keep delivering real value it will not go unnoticed. Your recognition and traffic likely will not come overnight, but when it does come it will be authentic, organic and won’t be subjected to Google’s lethal daggers that will drop you faster than a hot potato.

This post is not a knock on those teaching SEO services. Like I said, I actually think programs like Bring The Fresh are beneficial and can teach you a lot.

However, nothing and I mean nothing will ever beat you delivering AMAZING content that is so good that the world can’t help but share with others. So get out there and start producing something you love, something you can’t wait to share just for the pure enjoyment of affecting and changing someones life, not for the back link or search engine rankings.

Do You Have A Money Room?

I’d like to ask you a very important question.

Do you have a designated “Money Room”?

Okay, let me explain.

A Money Room is a place where you go to be creative, work and bring in the moolah. Before I move into any new home I always ask myself… “Where is the Money Room?”

Last week I once again moved into a new home. I know, I know, it feels like my 236th move in the last two years.  It’s a stunning home built on the golf course in the cute little surf town of Encinitas just north of San Diego. I actually left the oceanfront in La Jolla to share this dream home with my beautiful new fiancé Andrea. We have big hopes and dreams for this place.

Anyhow, when we were shopping for a new home I was very persistent about having a cozy room that was conducive to making money. Without it, there is no way I could justify the astronomical rent.

So, whether you live in a Bel Air mansion or a Tallahassee trailer park, it’s essential that you have a place you can go to make your money. Your money room doesn’t have to be an elaborate and expensive place, it just needs to be a place that will inspire you and put you in the mood to start cranking out the loot cakes.

One quick tip is you can decorate your desk with a Money Tree as seen here. Hey, it’s worth a try.

How To Fast Forward Video Without Controls

Okay, this may totally amount to internet marketing cock-blocking, but I had to do it. So many people have voiced frustrations with this so I thought I’d help y’all out.

Over the last couple years I’ve heard one complaint more so than just about anything else in internet marketing, and that is frustration with videos that have no controls. These videos will not allow you to fast forward, or rewind, and don’t even think about hitting the refresh button or clicking anything on the page or you’ll have to start the entire video all over from the beginning.

Now there is a reason why these type of videos have become so common place. The bottom line is they work. People have preconceived notions all the time, and if you don’t force someone to sit through the set up of a video sales letter, it’s very unlikely that they will be interested in your product or service if they are allowed to see the price tag right away. Therefore it’s a clever tactic, it’s just a bit annoying.

However, I’m super impatient. While I understand why the marketers do this, I too just want to see the bottom line. Show me the pitch already. So, if you are anything like me, I think you’ll really dig this tip on how to fast forward videos without controls and watch them at your own pace.
